Tricia joined the Trauma Center team at Duke University Hospital as the Injury Prevention Coordinator in June 2017. In this role, she provides education and outreach throughout Durham and surrounding counties aimed at preventing injuries, as well as collaboration with local and regional agencies addressing injuries in various ways. Her focus is on the top mechanisms of injury seen at Duke: falls, motor vehicle crashes, and gunshot wounds. Prior to working at Duke, Tricia was in the sexual violence prevention field at the regional and state level in NC for about six years. Tricia earned her undergraduate degrees at the University of Maryland at College Park and her Masters in Social Work at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Firearm Injury Prevention Collaboratives and You

With gun violence being such a complex issue, it's hard to know where to start tackling it. One model of interdisciplinary community work that is a promising practice in NC is the Gun Safety Team, or Firearm Injury Prevention Collaborative. Durham, NC pioneered this model in 1999 and in its 25+ years, it has brought together a range of community partners across the City and County to address safe storage of firearms and other functional strategies for combatting gun violence. Now, this model is being taught to communities across NC and you can take home the tools you need to make this multidisciplinary collaborative a reality in your community.
1) Participants will understand the benefits of a multidisciplinary approach to addressing gun violence in their community
2) Participants will begin preliminary research on the impact of gun violence on their community
3) Participants will create a list of prospective participants to invite to their Firearm Injury Prevention Collaborative
4) Participants will draft the logistics of their first Firearm Injury Prevention Collaborative
